Cairns and Northern beachesCairns & Beaches

Cairns is the hub of Tropical North Queensland and is alive with cafes, culture, five-star resorts and restaurants, award-winning spas and a busy night life. It also has the easy-going charm of the tropics with its iconic swimming lagoon, 2.5km long esplanade and a vibrant marina. Cairns also has the closest access to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which is the largest reef in the world also making it the world's largest World Heritage Area.

The Cairns Beaches begin on the northern fringe of the Cairns CBD and stretch along a 26 kilometre of spectacular coastline. Miles of sandy shores yield to sweeping backdrops of rainforest and mountains to the west, and the glorious Coral Sea to the east. All this awaits for you to swim, sail, or simply relax under a palm tree at Machans, Holloways, Yorkey’s Knob, Trinity, Kewarra, Clifton, Palm Cove and Ellis Beaches. Together these beachside towns provide much of Cairns’ holiday accommodation and each is a small, separate township with its own distinctive character and plenty of space for those seeking solitude or easy access to reef and rainforest tours or nearby wildlife attractions.

Hit the beach where watersports gear can be hired right on the beach, so why not give kayaking, wakeboarding and kite surfing a try? If it’s a refreshing ocean swim you’re after, stinger resistant swimming enclosures afford protection during the summer months at most beach locations. And just off the shore, a journey to numerous tropical islands can become a reality with the help of a day tour or charter vessel.

Today, both Trinity Beach and Palm Cove have become sought after resort destinations where visitors can relax in four and five star comfort. Palm Cove has also gained the moniker of “Australia’s Spa Capital” due to its award-winning array of exclusive spa resorts offering the best in spa and pampering services.
