Head from Townsville to Ayr visiting Bowling Green Bay National Park on the way. Enjoy wildlife spotting, have a swim and picnic at Alligator Creek and maybe camp for the night. Continue to Cromarty Wetlands and then take a short drive to Pioneer Mill, a quaint township hosting beautiful waterbirds.

Next stop, Brandon. Visit the Brandon Historic Precinct including the heritage-listed Brandon Catholic Church.

Stop at Ayr for the night. Ayr, with its diverse agricultural and ethnic community has a range of attractions including a gourmet deli, a nature display, galleries and Gubullamunda, the totem of the local indigenous group.

Drive south west from Ayr and visit the Burdekin Bridge and River for fishing, water sports and birdwatching. Travel to Home Hill and then to the Clare Irrigation Area Soldiers Settlement. Explore the historic goldmining town of Ravenswood and the ghosts that inhabit it.

Visit the Open Gold Mine and take a 5-minute drive to the White Blow Environmental Park to see the ancient Quartz Rock outcrop . Stop for a cool drink at the Mingela Pub or visit the birdlife in the wetlands before heading north to Townsville via a couple of World War 2 sites in Woodstock.
